Meet Ashley Kuhlmann, the founder+creator of Beta to Butter Wellness
Welcome!
I’m Ashley, the founder+creator of Beta to Butter Wellness. I’m a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Functional Assessment Specialist. I created this practice because I believe nutrition and healthy living should be simple. And unique to each of us. We’re all different, we each require different things to support our bodies in the best way possible.
I’ve always loved food (who doesn’t), but I really became interested in nutrition and how it effects our bodies and our lives after I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at the age of 15: Type One Diabetes. If you don’t know, an autoimmune disease is what happens when the body starts to attack itself. My body started to attack my pancreas causing me to become Type One Diabetic (T1D).
This is where I’ll stop and explain the title “Beta to Butter”.
You may be thinking… “Okay, butter – got that. Food. But beta?? What is that about?”
My body thought the beta cells that were in my pancreas were actually not good for me and began to attack them. These beta cells are what create insulin, the hormone that is in charge of distributing sugar to the right parts of your body, to help maintain the body’s blood sugar. (Blog post on Type One Diabetes you can read coming soon!)
When I was first diagnosed with T1D, I didn’t really get a lot of education in the nutrition department and what I would need to now be paying attention to while navigating this new part of my life. I was told to count my carbs, calculate the amount of insulin needed, then give myself a shot. Nothing about the types of foods that I was eating, nothing about how fiber and fat would be different than eating just carbs.
My experience & curiosity of my own health led me to do a round of Whole30 in college, to realize how incredible I felt that entire month. My brain was clear, I had an incredible amount of energy, I was sleeping all night… and so much more. This really helped me understand on a deeper level how much food truly effects us mentally, physically, and emotionally. Our bodies & brains are made of the food we eat… nutrition is so important!
But the more I researched, the more I realized how confusing this space can be. There are a plethora of diets & information on what to do if X or Y is happening to you – and I wanted to do something to help change this.
So I enrolled at the Nutritional Therapy Association to become a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. The NTA believes and teaches a whole foods approach to nutrition & living, to keep it simple & eat real things.
I now work with clients on a one-on-one basis (virtual or in-person) to get to the root cause of whatever symptoms they may be having, or to achieve their personal health goals. I understand it can feel confusing. I’m here to help.
Please reach out to me for a free 15 minute discovery call if you would like to work with me or want to hear more about what I do! I’d love to partner with you and and advocate for your heath.
